While stitching this charming sampler, students will learn eight unique
stitches: Reverse Mosaic, Alternating Double Backstitch, Woven Double
Herringbone, Chevron, Two-sided Italian, Rounded Wheat, Herringbone
Couching, and Reverse Cross. In addition, students will also learn some
of the history of the stitches and the symbolism behind the motifs used.
The charming verse comes from a sampler dated 1796 and states:
Adam and Eve whilst innocent
In Paradise were placed
But soon the serpent by his whiles
The happy pair disgraced
The Adam and Eve motif was charted from a circa 1800 German sampler
from my personal collection.
The Happy Pair Disgraced was stitched on 28 count Lambswool linen using
a selection of over-dyed threads from The Gentle Art. The size of the
finished piece is approximately 4.6” wide by 11.2” long. The muted
colors used are Evergreen, Seaspray, Mountain Mist, Lambswool, Antique
Rose, Shutter Green, Summer Meadow, Sable, Brandy, and Clover.
The Happy Pair Disgraced is taught as a 1-day class with approximately
6 hours of class time.
