Reproduction Samplers
John Viott 1826
A sampler stitched by a boy is very rare and
this is a wonderful example. It is quite large
(215 by 216 stitches) and is full of alphabets,
birds, trees, vines with flowers, and baskets of
flowers. The stitches used are cross and Queen
(Rococo). The original was stitched on very
uneven weave linen; 38 vertical threads to the
inch and 26 horizontal threads to the inch. The
sample was stitched on tea-dyed 35 count linen
using DMC floss. Instructions for tea-dying the
linen are included. The floss colors have been
matched as closely as possible to the original.
The sampler has been charted as the original
was stitched, mistakes included.

Susanna Hawker was seven years old when she
stitched this sampler. We know this because
she included her birth date - "Susanna Hawker
- 4 month twenty six day 1780." At the bottom
Susanna stitched "1787" which was the year she
finished her sampler. This sampler is quite an
accomplishment for a seven year old child.
Included are three alphabets (one in eyelet),
various bands and a verse stitched over one
thread. The original sampler was stitched on 27
count natural linen using wool threads. The
reproduction was stitched on 27 natural linen
using DMC floss to match the original colors.
Stitch count is 117 wide X 188 high.
